OPEN WORK PERMIT


Students who applied for or held a study permit before 1 November 2024 will remain eligible for a PGWP under the existing rules. However, students applying for a study permit on or after this date will be subject to the new guidelines ( you must have graduated a bachelor's degree, master's degree , doctoral or other diploma ( college or other university diploma) in an eligible field of study).
If you're applying for an open work permit, make sure one of the followings describe your situation :
  • You are an international student who graduated from a designated learning institution and is eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.
  • You are a student who's no longer able to meet the costs of your studies (destitute student).
  • You are a holder of an employer-specific work permit and are being abused or at risk of being abused in relation to your job in Canada.
  • You are a dependent family member of someone who applied for permanent residence.
  • You are the spouse, common-law partner or dependent child of a low- or high-skilled worker.
  • You are the spouse or common-law partner of an applicant of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program or the Atlantic Immigration Program.
  • You are a refugee, refugee claimant, protected person or their family member.
  • You are under an unenforceable removal order.
  • You are a temporary resident permit holder.
  • You are in Canada and being sponsored as a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner or accompanying dependent child.
  • You are a young worker participating in special programs.
  • You are under an unenforceable removal order.
  • You are a Quebec investor who received a Quebec Notice of Intent to Select.
  • You are the spouse or common-law partner of an international student in Canada, that one of these situations applies to his case :
    • Studying a master's or doctoral degree program or
    • Participating in an eligible pilot program, such as Le projet de reconnaissance des compétences d'infirmières et d'infirmiers recruté-e-s à l'international. or
    • Studying in one of the following professional programs at a Canadian university :
      • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS, DMD)
      • Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor (LLB, JD, BCL)
      • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
      • Doctor of Optometry (OD)
      • Pharmacy (PharmD, BS, BSc, BPharm)
      • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
      • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN, BSN, BNSc)
      • Bachelor of Education (BEd)
      • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng, BE, BASc)
