In general, and with some exceptions, to keep your status as permanent resident, you must live in Canada for at least 730 days during of each period of 5 years. The requested number of days do not need to be continuous.
Residency Obligation Appeal
If you are a permanent resident who is outside Canada and a visa officer finds that you did not meet your residency obligation, you can appeal the decision to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD). The process of the residency obligation appeal is to give you the opportunity to explain why you should keep your permanent resident status.
If you are in Canada and you did not meet your residency obligation, you will receive the notice of the removal order which you can appeal.
